Health and Safety Policy for Storage Hammersmith
Storage Hammersmith is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for employees, contractors, visitors, and customers. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with storage, removals, transport, and related services. Our aim is to prevent injury, protect health, and ensure safe working practices at all times.
Policy Statement and Objectives
The management of Storage Hammersmith recognises its duty to comply with applicable health and safety legislation and to promote a positive safety culture throughout the business. We will identify and control risks, provide appropriate training, and continuously improve our procedures. We are committed to:
Maintaining safe and secure storage facilities and vehicles.
Ensuring the safe handling, lifting, and transportation of goods and equipment.
Preventing accidents and work-related ill health.
Providing clear instructions, information, and supervision for employees.
Consulting with employees on matters affecting their health and safety.
Responsibilities
Health and safety is a shared responsibility across the organisation. Specific duties are as follows.
Senior management is responsible for implementing this policy, ensuring adequate resources are available, and reviewing performance on a regular basis. They will set clear objectives, monitor compliance, and act promptly on any identified shortcomings.
Managers and supervisors must ensure that safe systems of work are in place and followed. They are responsible for day to day safety management, including induction, training, supervision, incident reporting, and enforcement of rules within storage facilities and during removal operations.
Employees must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. They must follow training and instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards and incidents without delay, and cooperate fully with safety measures and procedures.
Contractors and visiting drivers must comply with the site rules and any specific instructions regarding loading, unloading, and access to storage units. They must ensure that their own equipment is safe and fit for purpose.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Storage Hammersmith will carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments for activities including lifting and carrying items, packing and unpacking, loading and unloading vehicles, operating within storage facilities, and driving and manoeuvring vehicles. The findings of risk assessments will be used to develop safe systems of work and to select appropriate equipment.
Risk assessments will be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to operations, equipment, or premises. Employees will be informed about relevant risks and control measures.
Manual Handling and Lifting Operations
Manual handling is a core part of removal and storage activities, and poor practice can result in serious injuries. Storage Hammersmith will minimise the need for hazardous manual handling by planning work, using mechanical aids where possible, and ensuring adequate staffing levels for heavy or awkward items.
Employees will receive training in safe lifting techniques, team lifting, and the correct use of handling equipment such as trolleys, dollies, and lifting straps. Loads will be assessed for weight, shape, and stability before being moved. No employee is expected to lift or carry an item that they consider unsafe or beyond their capability.
Vehicle and Driving Safety
Vehicles used for removals and storage operations will be maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition. Regular inspections and servicing will be carried out in line with manufacturer recommendations and legal requirements. Any defects must be reported immediately and vehicles must not be used until issues are rectified.
Drivers must hold the appropriate licence, follow road traffic laws, and operate vehicles responsibly. They must ensure loads are evenly distributed, properly secured, and do not exceed weight limits. Particular care must be taken when reversing, parking near storage facilities, and operating in residential or busy areas.
Safe Use of Equipment and Premises
All equipment used in storage and removal activities, including handling aids, ramps, and securing devices, must be used in accordance with training and manufacturer guidance. Damaged or defective equipment must be taken out of use and reported.
Storage areas, loading bays, corridors, and stairways must be kept clear of obstructions to reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls. Lighting must be adequate to allow safe movement and handling. Where appropriate, signage will be used to indicate hazards, speed limits, and restricted areas.
Hazardous Substances and Restricted Items
Certain items are unsuitable for storage or transport due to safety risks, including flammable substances, explosives, corrosive materials, and perishable goods that may create health hazards. Storage Hammersmith will clearly communicate conditions of storage and any restrictions to customers.
Where employees may come into contact with cleaning agents, fuels, or other substances, these will be assessed and controlled to prevent harm. Staff will be informed about safe handling, protective measures, and emergency procedures.
Training, Information, and Supervision
All employees will receive an appropriate health and safety induction and ongoing training relevant to their role, including manual handling, working at height where applicable, vehicle safety, emergency procedures, and incident reporting.
Supervision will be proportionate to the level of risk and the experience of the individual. Less experienced staff will be closely supervised during higher risk tasks such as heavy lifting and complex removals.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly to management. They will be investigated to identify root causes and to implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures, including fire evacuation, first aid arrangements, and response to spills or structural hazards, will be established and communicated to staff. Evacuation routes and exits must be kept clear at all times, and fire safety equipment must be maintained and accessible.
Health, Welfare, and Wellbeing
Storage Hammersmith recognises the importance of employee wellbeing. Reasonable welfare facilities will be provided, and work will be organised to reduce the risk of fatigue, stress, and overexertion, particularly during busy periods and demanding removal schedules.
Employees are encouraged to raise any concerns about their health or fitness for particular tasks. Where necessary, adjustments will be considered to ensure work can be carried out safely.
Monitoring, Review, and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy will be monitored and reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective and reflects current operations and legal requirements. Feedback from employees, customers, and contractors will be considered as part of our commitment to continuous improvement.
By working together, following training and procedures, and reporting concerns promptly, everyone involved with Storage Hammersmith can contribute to a safe and healthy environment for storage, removals, and associated activities.
